TRIGGER WARNING – we talk about violence and suicide

In this episode of the bullied brain we discuss the issue of abuse in relationships, particularly focusing on the abuse experienced by women. We highlight the alarming statistic that 1-in-4 women have been abused by a current or former partner.

Dr Jen Fraser talks about the connection between childhood trauma and intimate relationships, emphasising the importance of early care and nurture in shaping one’s ability to have healthy relationships.

Jen talks about individuals who have experienced abusive or neglectful childhoods may struggle with intimacy and vulnerability in relationships. It explains that traumatic experiences can lead to re-enacting past traumas and aligning with the aggressor as a survival mechanism and that society’s expectations of masculinity, such as repressing emotions, can contribute to this cycle of abuse.

We discuss the issue of domestic abuse leading to suicides among women. The need for early intervention through education and awareness to break the cycle of dependence and power imbalances in relationships and the significance of legislation to protect victims of domestic abuse.

We explore the psychological effects of abuse, highlighting the concept of learned helplessness and the perception of inescapability that can develop in victims’ minds. We also delve into the societal factors that contribute to abusive behaviour, such as misogyny and homophobia.
